Mike Bankston, an assistant district attorney in the Southwest Georgia Judicial Circuit, was arrested for a DUI early Wednesday morning in Mitchell County, District Attorney Joe Mulholland confirmed.
According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, at 2:15 a.m. Bankston was traveling west on Georgia 93 in Baconton and was given a green light to cross Georgia 300. A semi-truck driving north on 300 attempted to beat a red light and collided with Bankston’s vehicle. Neither driver was injured in the crash.
A breath test from GSP Trooper John Brinson revealed Bankston was intoxicated.
Mulholland stated Bankston would be disciplined internally in addition to going through traffic court.
“This was an incredibly unfortunate event,” Mulholland said. “I think it showed a bad error of judgment on Mike’s part.”
Mulholland added that he believed it was an isolated incident, and if he believed it was an ongoing problem, he would have taken different disciplinary steps.
“At the end of the day, it is about responsibility, but it is also about rehabilitation,” Mulholland said.
