Seventh grade team heading to season championship next week

The Bainbridge Middle School seventh grade Bearcats football team shut out Cairo’s Washington Middle School seventh grade Tigers 32-0 Thursday at Cairo High School’s West Thomas Stadium to nail down the Southwest Georgia Middle School Leagues seventh grade regular season championship.

The Bearcats will host Washington’s seventh grade Tigers, who are 5-1, in the league championship game Wednesday, October 21at Centennial Field. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m.

Bearcats head seventh grade coach Blake Carruthers said his team took command early and never gave it up.

“At one time Washington tried to change up their defensive scheme, but our players did a good job of adjusting to it,” coach Carruthers said.

The Bearcats grabbed a quick 8-0 first quarter lead when running back Reshad Broadnax ran 47 yards for a touchdown to culminate a 9 play 60 yard drive and fullback Jvon Lee ran in for the 2-point conversion.

The advantage went to 16-0 in the second quarter when wide receiver Caleb McDowell caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quayde Hawkins to culminate a 14- play, 73-yard drive and Lee ran in for the 2-point conversion

Broadnax ran 22 yards for a touchdown with t o culminate an 8-play, 54-yard drive and Lee ran ran in for the 2-point conversion to give the Bearcats a 24-0 third quarter lead.

The final Bearcats touchdown, which put them up 30-0 in the fourth quarter, when Lee ran 16 yards for a t ouchdown after Tigers defensive end Simpson Bowles re covered a Tigers fumle at the Tigers 16 yard line. Fullback Courtney Thomas ran off the left side for the 2-point conversion to make it 32-0.

The Tigers threatened late but their runner was stopped by a host of Bearcat defenders at the Bearcats 6-yard line.
