A holding tank at Liquid Transfer Terminals exploded Wednesday morning near the Bainbridge Marina, sending a pillar of black smoke into the sky.

Firefighters are currently working on managing the fire and extinguishing the flames. They tried water and have since switched to foam to control the flames. The container contained a liquid sulfur fertilizer.

Authorities say there has been one known death in the accident. All businesses in the area have been  evacuated

Spring Creek Road is closed off and traffic is being diverted to the bypass.

“My fingers are crossed that it’s liquid wax,” IDA executive director Rick McCaskill said. “Judging from the black smoke, that’s what it might be.”

McKaskill said that Liquid Transfer works with a lot of agricultural chemicals and liquid wax.

More information will be published as it becomes available.
