Bainbridge High School athletic director Stan Killough presents the Joe Crine male senior athlete of the year award to Hema Hasona.

Hema Hasona and Stephanie Mayfield, two of the top performers on coach Amy Thomas’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Lady Cats tennis teams, are the 2014-2015 Bainbridge High School male and female senior athletes of the year.

They won the award named for “Post-Searchlight sports editor Joe Crine, who has covered Bainbridge High School sports for 45 years.”

Hasona played number one singles and helped lead the Bearcats to the state Class AAAA Tennis Final Four. He was also a strong performer on coach Gretta Connor’s Bearcats swimming team, competing strongly in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.

Mayfield and Raylin Willis was the highly successful Lady Cats number one doubles team. She was also a member of coach Lea Hawkins strong competition cheerleading squad.

Hasona will continue his tennis career with the Florida A&M University Rattlers, who he recently signed a tennis scholarship with in November 2014.

Hasona and Mayfield both credited their coaches for constantly pushing them to be the best they can be in each of their two sports.

“Coach Thomas and coach Connor both wanted me to be the best tennis player and swimmer I can be,” Hasona said.  “They taught me to always concentrate on fundamentals.”
Mayfield said coach Thomas and competition cheerleading coach Lea Hawkins stressed the importance of being focused on the ultimate goal of always being prepared to compete.
