The Bainbridge High School Lady Cats soccer team captured a 3-2 Region 1-AAAA overtime penalty kick victory over the Crisp County High School Lady Cougars Friday night at Centennial Field.
The score was tied 1-1 following regulation play and overtime forcing the teams into a penalty kick shootout.
The Lady Cats scored first in seventeenth minute of the first half when freshman forward Paige Stegall kicked in a goal from six yards out.
The Lady Cougars tied the score 1-1 in the 37th minute when sophomore wing Kylie Wooten kicked in a goal from eight yards out.
The Lady Cats Cougars scored first in overtime when midfielder Megan Westenfeld kicked in a goal to the left side. But Lady Cats seniors Jennifer Becerra and Rebecca Mulkey countered with the tying and winning goals.
Coach Chip Ariail said both of the Lady Cats goaltenders played well. He pointed out that freshman starting goal keeper Morgan Cannon who had two saves, was forced from the game following a collision toward the end of the first half and sophomore midfielder Summer Boyd played well coming up with four saves including two crucial sops in the shootout.
“I was proud of our team effort by all of the ladies,” coach Ariail said. “I was especially proud of our back line of senior and center backs Rebecca Mulkey and Lily Gomez along with junior outside back Jasmine Taylor, freshman outside back Mary Mercer Reynolds and senior outside back Hanoria Barrios. Although many others also played well I felt sophomore midfielder Haley Thompson played her best game of the year battling Crisp County’s talented midfielder.”
