The Bainbridge Middle School Bearcats scored six runs in the final four innings Tuesday to overcome an early 6-2 deficit and pull out a 7-6 victory over the Thomas County Central Middle School Yellow Jackets.
Trailing 6-2 going to the bottom of the fourth, the Bearcats quickly rallied for three runs to cut it to 6-5. Pitcher Kaleb Varnum drew a walk to open the inning. He moved up to second when first baseman Wesley Morrow was safe on an error.
Third baseman Brad Mitchell followed with a double driving in both runners to cut the advantage to 6-4. Mitchell came in with the fifth run on a fielder’s choice.
The Bearcats pushed the tying run across in the bottom of the fifth. It was scored by extra hitter Austyn Holcombe, who singled, moved up to second on a fielder’s choice, went to third on a d fielder’s choice and came in on a fielder’s choice.
The winning run came across in the bottom of the seventh and final frame. Shortstop Sam Boutwell led off the inning with a triple and came home on a one out fielder’s choice.
After the game Bearcats coach Christopher Bryant said he was very pleased with his teams strong come back effort.
“Our team was really focused throughout the game,” he said. “We pitched well and really did a good job of hitting in the clutch.”
