The Robert F. Munroe High School Bobcats came up with a run in the top of the fifth inning Friday to break a 2-2 tie and went on to defeat the Bainbridge High School Bearcats 6-2 in the final game of the Southwest Georgia Farm Credit Interstate Invitational Baseball Tournament at the Bearcat Diamond.
First baseman Will Harris reached base on an error to open the Bobcats fifth and moved up to second on a fielder’s choice. Johnny Walkup singled him home.
The Bearcats took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. The runs were scored by designated hitter Dustin Hodge, who singled third baseman Will Kelley who doubled.
The Bobcats added three runs in the top of the sixth to go up 5-2. Kyle Skipper grounded out from second to first to open the inning. After Casey Mathers struck out, pitcher Nolan Haire singled to center. Will Harris then singled to center moving Haire up the second. Right fielder Brad Strickland was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Johnny Walkup singled in Haire and Harris with the third and fourth runs.
The Bobcats added their sixth run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Bradley Klees.
Bearcats coach Brian McCorkle was not pleased with his team’s performance against Robert F. Munroe.
“We made some throwing errors and just did not play sound defense overall,” coach McCorkle said. “I felt Robert F. Munroe was a team we should have beaten. If we played them 10 times we should have beaten them all 10. The effort was just not there. We will be going into our Region 1-AAAA schedule so we need to refocus.”
The Bearcats returned to action Tuesday when they travelled to Tallahassee to take on the Leon High School Lions. They will meet the Lincoln High School Trojans Friday at 7 p.m. in Tallahassee.
They will open Region 1-AAAA play Monday, March 2 when they host Albany’s Dougherty High School Trojans in a doubleheader. The first game will get underway at 5 p.m.
