Lady Cats soccer team starts off season 2-1

The Bainbridge High School Lady Cats soccer team has gotten off to a 2-1 overall start and are 1-0 in Region 1-AAAA play.

The Bearcats dropped their season opener dropped a 4-0 decision to the Northview High School Lady Cougars in Dothan, Alabama.

Lady Cats coach Chip Ariail liked the way his Lady Cats pressured the Lady Cougars.

“We pressured well throughout the contest, but the Lady Cougars were able to get behind the defense and score two goals in each half,” Ariail said.

In their second game and their first game against a Region 1-AAAA opponent, the Lady Cats shut out the Americus-Sumter County High School Lady Panthers 7-0 at Centennial Field. Although both teams are Region 1-AAAA members, the game was treated as a non-region contest.

Lady Cats senior midfielder Jennifer Becerra got behind the lady Panthers and scored on a shot in the center from six yards out in the fifth minute.

The score was set up following a long pass from sophomore midfielder Summer Boyd to sophomore forward Ilean Marquez, who then quickly passed to Becerra running down the left side to set up the scoring shot.

In the seventh minute, Boyd scored on a 22-yard crossing shot to the left side of the goal, assisted by senior midfielder Rebecca Mulkey who had dropped the ball back from the penalty area to her teammate.

The Lady Cats scored three more goals in the first half to take a 5-0 halftime lead. In the 27th minute, Mulkey scored following a steal from freshman forward Paige Stegal in the Lady Panthers penalty area. Stegal passed the ball up for a crossing shot to the left post of the goal from five yards out.

The fourth Lady Cats goal came in the 33rd minute. Stegal’s shot was pressured into the waiting foot of Becerra, who scored the goal on a shot from 10 yards out. The final goal of the half came in the 38th minute. Becerra intercepted a Lady Panther goal kick and scored on a 21-yard shot outside the penalty area.

The final two goals of the contest occurred in the 49th an 70th minutes. Marquez scored one in the 49th minute and Mulkey in the 70th minute. Each finished with a three-goal hat trick.
