Decatur County Sheriff’s Office deputies are looking for an inmate who escaped during a work detail Monday afternoon.

Around 12:30 p.m. Monday, James Earl Jenkins, 18, ran into a wooded area off Black Jack Road, where a crew had work detail, said Decatur County Prison Warden Elijah McCoy.

Jenkins is described as a black male, 5’2”, 131 pounds.

McCoy said that Georgia State Patrol has a helicopter circling the area helping with the search along with a team of search dogs.

“We’re out here looking for him,” said DCSO Major Wendell Cofer.

Law enforcement has not yet picked up a trail on Jenkins.

“We need to get a trail started on this guy,” McCoy said.

The public is asked to keep an eye out for and report any suspicious persons.
