Devontae Jones hit a 3-point jumper from the right side with 29 seconds remaining in the game last Friday night, giving the Bainbridge High School Bearcats a 94-89 lead against the Thomasville Bulldogs, going on to down them 97-93.
The Bulldogs cut the advantage to 94-93 on a basket by Jordan Wells, who led the Thomasville in scoring with 26 points. Jones then sealed the victory with a jumper.
After the game, Bearcats coach Rickey McCullough said he knew the Bulldogs were strong and had only one loss coming into the game.
“Tyree Crump had a tremendous effort with a game high 31 points,” he said. “Devontae Jones really came through with key basket late to allow us to pull out the victory.”
The Bulldogs took the early lead, but the Bearcats pulled even 7-7 when Trevon Shaw, who finished with 12 points, hit a layup with 2:10 left in the first quarter. They trailed 21-16 at the end of the first quarter and took a 27-25 lead when Jones hit a basket at the 4:25 mark of the second quarter.
Shaw’s rebound put the Bearcats up 33-29 with 2:41 remaining in the second quarter. They were out front 36-33 at halftime and trailed 57-56 after three quarters.
Myles Thomas, who finished with nine points, hit a jumper with 5:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to put the Bearcats ahead 70-59. They went up by 12, 78-66 when Crump hit two free throws with 3:41 showing on the fourth quarter clock.
The Bearcats returned to action Friday, hosting the Crisp County High School Cougars in a Region 1-AAAA match. They will travel to Cairo Saturday night for a Region 1-AAAA game against the Cairo high School Syrupmakers.
