The Bainbridge Lady Cats defeated the Americus-Sumter Lady Panthers 55-51 Saturday in Americus behind the efforts of Alexandria Carter and Patra Parris, who combined for 35 points.
Carter led the way with 19 points and Parris put in 16. Rounding out the scoring chart for the Lady Cats, who were 10-3 going into Tuesday’s home game against the Thomasville High School Lady Bulldogs, were Tameria Levens with eight points, Asia Gordon with six and Alexis Russ, Beonka Madge and Nadia Marshall all with two.
The Lady Cats led 9-4 after the first quarter, and 23-22 at halftime. They trailed 36-35 at the end of the third quarter. They then outscored the Lady Panthers 20-15 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.
Atyana Goulden of the Lady Panthers took game scoring honors with 22 points. Tinia Swann was also in double figures for the home team with 11 points.
Lady Cats coach Kelvin Cochran was very impressed with play of leading scorer Goulden.
“Goulden was Americus-Sumter’s point guard and team leader,” Cochran said. “I thought our young ladies were really focused and ready to play. I was proud of the way they hung in there and got the job done. They shot well, handled the ball well and turned in a strong defensive effort. I could not be prouder of them. They really came up with big plays in key situations.”
The Lady Cats will play two Region 1-AAAA games over the weekend. On Friday, they will host the Crisp County High School Lady Cougars and on Saturday they will travel to Cairo for a match up with the Cairo High School Syrupmaids. They will be the first games that count in the Region 1-AAAA standings.
The Lady Cats play each Region 1-AAAA team twice but only the second games affect the Region 1-AAAA standings.
