The Bainbridge Middle School eighth grade Lady Cats and Bearcats swept a couple of Monday games over the Early County Lady Bobcats and Bobcats Monday in Blakely.
Coach Dot Pierce’s Lady Cats won 29-28 on a last second layup by guard Zycheria Russ. She stole the ball with four seconds remaining and drove in. The buzzer went off as the ball went through the hoop.
Coach Heith Maxwell’s Bearcats were awarded a forfeit victory when two technical fouls were called on the Bobcats.
“Zycheria always seems to come through for us in the clutch,” Pierce said looking back on Russ’ buzzer beating winning shot. “I am proud of her and all our other players who have greatly contributed to our 5-1 record.”
Others contributing to the Lady Cats impressive record include forward Mycha Harris, who had a team high 15 points against the Lady Bobcats, forward Takemia Crankfield and center Mattie Register.
The eighth grade Lady Cats and Bearcats return to action Wednesday when they host the Thomas County Central Middle School eighth grade Lady Yellow Jackets and Yellow Jackets at the Decatur County Memorial Coliseum. The girls’ game will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the boys’ game will follow.
