Alys Eloise Callan, 90, of Colquitt, died Saturday, November 22, 2014, at her residence. Visitation was held Tuesday, November 25, 2014, from 10-11 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. service at Colquitt United Methodist Church with Rev. Rebecca Duke-Barton and Rev. Brian Hatchett officiating. Interment followed at Colquitt City Cemetery with her grandsons, Preston Scott Hearn and George Parks Callan, III; grandsons-in-law, Gregory Scott Walbridge, Michael Ryan Powell, and David Todd Godfrey; great grandsons Jordan Phillip Callan, George Parks Callan IV, Jaret Mark “JM” Bryan, William Clyde Walbridge, III, Robert Preston Hearn, II, and Michael Callan Powell serving as pall bearers.
Mrs. Callan was a member of Colquitt United Methodist Church. After attending ABAC, Mrs. Callan transferred and graduated from the University of Georgia. She taught school for many years in the counties of Miller, Early, Decatur, and McDuffie before serving as Director of Miller County Department of Family and Children Services for 25 years until her retirement. Alys contributed her time and talents to many civic and professional organizations. Alys Callan was always committed to her family and her beloved community of Colquitt, GA.
She is survived by one son, George Parks (Maridel) Callan, Jr. of Colquitt; one daughter, Elaine Callan (Robert) Hearn of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren, Preston Scott (Rebecca) Hearn, Nicole Hearn (Greg) Walbridge, George Parks (Elisha) Callan, III, Lacy A. Callan, and Mary Elizabeth (Ryan) Powell; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Jones Murphy of Tampa, Fla., and LaTrelle Jones King of Thomaston, Ga.; and a large number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Callan was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Paula Jones; her husband, George Parks Callan, Sr.; and one brother, Howard McClellan Jones.
