GCA basketball teams both open with wins

The Grace Christian Academy Lady Cougars and Cougars basketball teams opened their seasons Tuesday with a pair of wins over Albany’s Byne Christian School Lady Saints and Saints at Perry Memorial Gymnasium.
Coach Erwin Harrell’s Lady Cougars raced out to an early 18-0 lead on the way to a 72-9 victory. Dr. Mallory McRae’s Cougars defeated the Saints 57-34.
Lading the way for the Lady Cougars was Perra Harrell with 22 points. Also in double figures were Shelby Woodrum with 14 and Kelsey Harrell with 12.
Top Lady Cougar rebounders were Addie Elkins with nine, Perra Harrell with seven and Hannah Wynn with six. Kelsey Harrell had eight assists and Shelby Woodrum had six assists.
Perra Harrell had eight steals. Gracie Hanniford was the leading Lady Saints scorer with six points.
The Cougars were led Tuesday by Jack McRae with 32 points. Tray Webb and Trey Dudley scored eight apiece. Jack McRae had eight rebounds and Anders Austinson had five. Brent Warr had four assists and Sam McRae had three steals.
Coach Harrell was very pleased with his Lady Cats performance pointing out that they made 34 baskets, 23 of which came from assists.
“We still have a lot of work to do, but I could not be more pleased with the way we played Tuesday,” he said.
Dr. McRae said he thought his Cougars played really hard and did very well considering it was their first game.
“We have more depth this year, but we’ve still got a lot of things to work on,” he said.
