Sheriff’s Office employee arrested for sexual assault

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Glen Gerald Anderson, an employee of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, at the Decatur County jail Wednesday.
Anderson is charged with sexual assault and violation of oath by a public officer.
The arrest calls into question whether the Decatur County Board of Commissioners will allow Anderson’s legal counsel to be paid for by the county, per a resolution it passed in August.
The resolution states the county may pay for legal counsel of an employee “at their discretion,” for civil, criminal or quasi-criminal cases.
“I really don’t know any of the specifics about that,” Decatur County attorney Brown Moseley said, declining to comment until he and the board had time to evaluate the charges.
Anderson’s arrest comes just a day after the board unanimously voted at the county commission meeting Tuesday for Moseley to represent DCSO employee Normal Cotton, who is accused of sexual assault.
“I have recently been notified by the District Attorney’s office that an indictment for Sexual Assault Against an Inmate in a Correctional Facility will be presented against me at the Decatur County Grand Jury in November,” Cotton said in a letter to the board.
The letter continues to read, “I am requesting that the county provide legal representation to defend whatever accusations or charges that arise out of this investigation.”
At the meeting, the board discussed the unexpected effects the resolution has had on the county, with commissioner Russell Smith calling it a “Pandora’s Box.” Smith made a motion to rescind the resolution, but it was dropped for lack of a second.
Anderson bonded out Thursday for a total of $17,400. He is expected to appear in superior court Dec. 16.
