Coach Blake Carruthers’ Bainbridge Middle School seventh grade Bearcats shut out Thomasville’s McIntyre Park Middle School seventh grade Bulldogs 12-0 Thursday at Centennial Field.
The Bearcats went ahead 6-0 when Eddie Cooper ran 11 yards for a touchdown with 6:24 left in the first quarter.
Quarterback Sam Boutwell ran 20 yards around the left side for an apparent touchdown with 5:15 showing on the first quarter clock, but the play was called back on a block in the back penalty.
The Bearcats went up 12-0 when quarterback Wyatt Wilson ran five yards for a touchdown with 6:23 left in the second quarter.
Carruthers said he thought his team played hard and well against McIntyre Park.
“We really did a good job against McIntyre Park,” he said. “The first time we played them in Thomasville we had to score late to beat them 20-14. Sam Boutwell scored a touchdown from three yards out and two more from four yards out. Everyone played well this time. It was a real team victory and I am proud of all our players.”
They will conclude their regular season next Wednesday when they travel to Cairo to take on the Washington Middle School seventh grade Tigers at Cairo High School’s West Thomas Stadium.
The seventh grade Bearcats only loss this season is to Washington, who is undefeated. A victory over Washington would throw the Southwest Georgia Middle School League standings into a tie. Since both teams would have beaten each other it would go a tiebreaker geared to the number of runs scored to determine first and second place.
The first place team will host the second place team Wednesday, Oct. 15 in the Southwest Georgia Middle School League seventh grade championship game.
