Bainbridge High School takes great pride in its competitive sport teams. The cross-country team is a group of 38 high school students that push themselves through long distances of running. Cross-country is a sport that depends on the determination, dedication and strength of the runners. The team has spent many practices preparing for their meets this season, and those practices have already begun to pay off.

Under the head coaching of Yvette Greene, along with the BMS head coach Greta Connor and community coaches Daniel Graham, Greg Waddell Chip Nix, and David Braswell, the BHS cross country team started practices during the summer break. Now that the school year has started, the team practices four days during the school week, and runners are encouraged to run independently on the weekend. During the practices, students will run distances ranging between three to six miles.  However, the high school students compete an approximate three miles (5K) at meets, which are normally held on Saturdays throughout the season.

The cross-country team competed in their first meet of this year in Pelham Aug. 23. The BHS boys brought home a first place trophy for the boys’ race, and the girls took second place for the girls’ race.

It was, without a doubt, a great start to the season!

The runners also competed in a race last Saturday, Sept. 6. The team will continue to work hard towards reaching the goals they have set for themselves in the meets to come. Yvette Greene said, “The coaches are extremely proud of the X-C team; the team has preserved through arduous workouts, very hot and humid weather, and aches and pains to reach their personal best. The coaches expect the team to be exceptionally competitive at all meets.”

Bainbridge will be hosting a cross-country meet on Sept. 20 at Bainbridge High School. It is a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to see our cross-country team doing what they love. Last year’s home meet was a great success for our runners and was enjoyed by all spectators.

Come and cheer on these dedicated runners as they cross over the finish line!
