The Bainbridge Polecats 50-and-older softball team won the Metro Atlanta Memorial Senior Softball Tournament championship for a second consecutive year.
They went 4-0 in the tournament and nailed down the championship with a 24-22 victory over the Gwinnett County All Stars Saturday, May 10, in Atlanta.
They blasted 28 home runs in the tournament and scored at least 17 runs in each of their four games. Their steady defense and consistent power hitting enabled them to maintain a consistent lead. They never trailed in late innings.
Team members include Kevin Joseph, owner of the team mascot dog Nellie, who attends every game. Before each game, when players throw their bags on the field Nellie runs out and sits by Joseph’s bag.
Other players on the team in addition to Joseph are Maston Griffin, Spencer Kennedy, Darrell Monson, Chick Reynolds, Wayne Griffin, Randy Croto, T.J. Jones, Gunny Grace, Jim Oros, Spencer Kennedy, Pablo Isern, Chuck Reynolds, Gunny Grace and J.W. Mathews.
Under tournament rules, the Bainbridge Polecats and all other Georgia senior teams can recruit players from Georgia and all other states that border Georgia. The rules are the same for all other teams from southern states.
