Bainbridge track and field brings home pair of medals

Raven Burney and Asia Thomas earned medals for coach Tandria Phillip’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats at Saturday’s State Class AAAAA track meet at the Hugh Mills Memorial Stadium Track in Albany.
At the state meet, Burney finished sixth in the long jump of 17-feet-7-inches, and Thomas finished eighth in the discus with a throw pf 108-feet-9-inches, her best of the season.
Paige Braswell also competed at state and finished 11th in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:57.47.
The Lady Cats, who finished third in Region 1-AAAAA, qualified Burney, Thomas and Braswell for the state meet with strong performances at the State Class AAAAA sectional meet Saturday, April 26, at Stars Mill High School near Atlanta.
At the Sectionals, Burney was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 17-feet-10 inches and Thomas was third in the discus with a throw of 107-feet-1-inch and Braswell was eighth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:27.43.
To qualify for sectionals, coach Tandria Phillips’s Region 1-AAAAA third place finishing Lady Cats had to finish in the top four of the Region 1-AAAAA finals in Albany.
At the finals, Burney won her fourth consecutive region championship with a first place 16-foot-10-inch-long jump and was fourth on the 4-by-100-meter relay team with Terrika Green, Tearnee Harvin and Jasminee Price in a time of 51.40. Thomas was second in the discus with a throw of 10-feet-3-inches.
Also at the finals, Braswell won the 3200-meter and 1600-meter championships in times of 12:09.27 and 5:47.88.
