The Bainbridge High School tennis courts were hot Monday, but that didn’t stop the Bearcats and Lady Cats from blasting their opponents.

Only one Bainbridge court saw a loss as the Bearcats swept Richmond Hill and the Lady Cats took down Effingham for the first round of state.

The loss came from Anna Beth Bowles and Maci Barber on No. 2 doubles, suffering a 6-2, 6-1 score. Mallie Rollins and Stephanie Mayfield won the No. 1 doubles match with the final score at 2-6, 3-6.

Rollins and Mayfield said their tough opponents and hot weather made the matches difficult.

“There were long points, it wasn’t easy,” Mayfield said.

The Lady Cats took wins on all their singles matches, with Taylor Greene winning 4-6, 1-6, Emma Kate Smith winning 0-6, 3-6 and Lynsey Waddell stomping her opponent 0-6, 0-6.

The No. 1 doubles match for the Bearcats saw Jack Reynolds and Bennett Enfinger taking the match 2-6, 3-6. The No. 2 doubles team of Josh Moorhead and Grayson Graham took an automatic win from a Richmond Hill forfeit.

Hema Hasona ruled the No. 1 singles court, winning 0-6, 0-6.

“We pulled it out on all courts pretty quickly and we did really well,” Hasona said. “My opponent was very consistent. I just had to stay patient with all my shots and make sure I kept going.”

Hasona’s brother, Nour, also won on the No. 2 singles court 2-6, 0-6. Jones Gossett took the No. 3 singles match win 0-6, 0-6.

The Lady Cats host McIntosh Friday at the BHS courts at 1:30 p.m.
