Freida Mae Darsey Wheeler, 93, of Tampa, FL, died Friday, March 28, 2014 at Lee County Health Care.
Her funeral service was at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014 at Concord Cemetery, Concord, Fla. The Rev. William Collins officiating.
Mrs. Wheeler was born in Amsterdam, Ga., which is in Decatur County. Her parents were the late Charlie H. and Mettie Mae Connell Darsey. She received her undergraduate degree from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga. and received her master’s degree from Boston College. She was employed for 40 years in the Hillsborough County, Fla. Public School System, retiring in 1985. She taught home economics and then was a guidance counselor.
Mrs. Wheeler was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tampa.
She was preceded in death by a brother Joe Darsey; and a sister Annette Darsey Knowles.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by a brother Herschel Darsey and his wife Martha, of Albany; a brother-in-law Larry Knowles and his wife Linda, DeLand, Fla.; a sister-in-law Parkerlyn Darsey, Tallapoosa, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Maelu Culpepper and her husband Lew, Albany, Chuck Darsey and his wife Cris, Albany, Boyd Darsey and his partner Paul, West Palm Beach, Fla., Joel Darsey, Newnan, Ga., Jonathan Darsey and his wife Donna, Atlanta, Sam Knowles, DeLand, and Mark Knowles serving as a missionary in Moldova.
Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Home of Albany was in charge of arrangements.
