The Bainbridge High School Boys varsity soccer team picked up two non region wins to remain undefeated by defeating the Albany High School Indians 10-0 and the Cairo High School Syrupmakers 4-3.
Bainbridge travelled to Albany last Friday and came away with a 10-0 win, which was the team’s sixth straight shutout win of the season. Senior Forward Emilio Hernandez scored five goals in the route.
In a spirited game with the Cairo Syrupmakers, the Bearcats fought off the upset-minded visitors and prevailed 4-3 Tuesday at Centennial Field.
Bainbridge scored first in minute 18 as the forward Emilio Hernandez sent a corner kick into the penalty area where midfielder Leroy Rivera timed a run and headed the shot into the goal to make the score 1-0.
Cairo tied the score in minute 28 as a Syrupmaker forward received his own deflected shot and quickly put it to the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.
Right before the end of the first half, Bainbridge senior midfielder Michael Moran sent a crossing pass to senior midfielder Luis Mejia who turned and scored from the top of the penalty area, giving the Bearcats the lead at 2-1.
The Bearcats seemed to have the game in hand as Moran lobbed a pass from midfield towards Hernandez, who quickly split the Cairo defense and chipped a shot from the top of the penalty area.
The Syrupmaker goalkeeper tried to save the shot, but was unsuccessful. Bainbridge extended the lead at 3-1.
The Cairo squad was not deterred as they followed up a deflected shot to the right of the goal to close the Bainbridge lead at 3-2.
The Bearcats again extended the lead 4-2 in minute 70 as freshman midfielder Leroy Rivera scored on a breakaway from a pass sent by Mejia.
One minute later Cairo responded by scoring on a breakaway as well to complete the final scoring on the night.
