The 2014 Bainbridge Middle School and junior varsity soccer teams’ seasons got underway in a couple of exciting encounters.
The Bainbridge Middle School Boys and Girls teams each played in their first contest hosting the Cairo Middle School teams at Centennial field. In the girls game, Cairo raced to a 2-0 first half lead on their way to a 3-0 victory in a chilly contest. The Lady Bearcats hustled throughout the game and gained valuable experience, despite the loss, as many on the squad had their first time playing in a soccer game.
In the boys’ contest, the visitors jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. But Bainbridge came back as forward Efrain Diaz-Gonzalas finished off a shot in front of the Syrupmaker goal after a flurry of activity just before the end of the first half to cut the score at 2-1. Midway of the second half, forward Caleb Harris broke through the Cairo defense and scored a goal from eight yards out to tie the score at 2-2. Both teams battled throughout the contest, having several attacks and great defensive play but the result ended in a 2-2 tie.
In the Junior Varsity games, Bainbridge hosted Lee County and came up on the short end of a 6-0 loss in the girls’ game and a 4-1 loss in the boys’ contest.
In the girls game Lee County raced to 5-0 halftime lead in route to the 6-0 win. Despite the first half setback, Bainbridge stiffened up on defense the second half and played inspired, giving up only a lone goal to the talented Lady Trojan squad.
In the boys contest, Bainbridge battled throughout but were not able to corral the Trojan attack, resulting in the 4-1 loss. Jordan McMullen scored the goal for the Bearcats midway in the second half.
Both Junior Varsity Squads will travel to play Westover in Albany today with the girls’ game starting at 4:30 p.m. followed by the boys’ contest at 5:30 p.m.
