Former U. S. President Jimmy Carter is scheduled to speak at Bainbridge State College on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center.
The President’s visit is part of Bainbridge State’s inaugural Arts and Lecture Series, which is being presented this year by Allstate Construction. This event is free thanks to President Carter lecture sponsor, Campus Café, along with partnering sponsors PDC Construction and Paula M. Adams, PT, DPT.  While there is no charge to attend, tickets are required for admission.
“President Carter has been on the world stage for almost 40 years, and we are truly looking forward to his visit as part of Bainbridge State’s inaugural Arts and Lecture Series. This will give our students and the community an opportunity to hear his view of history he helped shaped and a perspective on today’s events,” said Bainbridge State College President Richard Carvajal.
The president’s visit is also significant due in part to the relationship he held with the late Charles H. Kirbo, who played an instrumental role in getting Bainbridge State College to southwest Georgia and Bainbridge, and who donated most of the land on which the main campus sits. Kirbo was President Carter’s close confidant throughout the President’s political career, including advising Carter to concentrate on the restoration of confidence in government rather than the issue-oriented campaign President Gerald R. Ford was running.
Known in the early days of his successful 1976 presidential campaign as a peanut farmer from Plains, Ga., President Carter is now known throughout the world as a champion for human rights. The former president and governor of Georgia was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
Carter served as U.S. president from 1977 to 1981 and accomplished significant foreign policy actions such as the Panama Canal treaties, the Camp David Accords, the treaty between Egypt and Israel and the SALT II treaty with the former Soviet Union.
His administration’s domestic accomplishments included a comprehensive energy program conducted by a new Department of Energy; major educational programs under a new Department of Education; deregulation in energy, transportation, communications and finance, and major environmental protection legislation.
The 39th president of the United States was educated in the public schools of Plains, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his bachelor’s from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. He served as a submariner, rising to the ranks of lieutenant, and he later studied reactor technology and nuclear physics at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

Tickets for President Carter
As with all the events in the College’s Arts and Lecture Series, President Carter’s event is free and open to the public.  However, tickets are required for admission.
Tickets for the public are available beginning Monday, Jan. 27, at 9 a.m. in the lobby of the Kirbo Center on the Bainbridge State main campus. There is a two-ticket maximum per person.  Auditorium tickets are limited. Limited overflow tickets for a live simulcast are available if auditorium tickets run out.
Bainbridge State College’s Early County Center will also host this event via live simulcast in the lobby.  A limited number of tickets for this simulcast will be available for the public on Monday, Jan. 27, at 9 a.m. in Blakely.  There is a two-ticket maximum per person for the BSC – Early County Campus simulcast.
