For the second consecutive year, the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Parent Teacher Association have recognized a Decatur County School System parent volunteer.
Gail Bouie, parent volunteer at West Bainbridge Elementary School, was named one of six statewide winners of the 2014 Georgia Parent Leadership Award. Bouie received the award last Saturday in Atlanta during the 2014 Georgia Family Engagement Conference and was recognized at the Decatur County Board of Education meeting Thursday night.
“Gail is a parent who inspires other parents to come out and be a part of the school and be a part of these children’s lives. She does a great job of bridging that gap between home and school,” said Allyson Matthews, principal at West Bainbridge Elementary School.
In addition to working at West Bainbridge Elementary School, Bouie also assists the countywide with the school system’s parent involvement initiative.
“We have people in our school system who I consider to be ‘impact players’ and I consider Gail Bouie to be a positive impact player. Every time you see her, she is having a positive impact and we sure appreciate her and her efforts,” said Dr. Fred Rayfield, superintendent of the Decatur County school system.
As a winner of the award, Bouie will serve on State Superintendent Dr. John Barge’s Parent Advisory Committee for the next year. Bouie will also have the chance throughout the year to share her story by promoting and assisting parent engagement activities at the state level.
Last year, Kellie Martin of Elcan-King Elementary School was also awarded the Parent Leadership Award.
