In what seems like a flurry of recent transfers and signings, a division one university has recruited yet another former Bearcat. This time it’s a basketball player.
Devon Baulkman, a 6-foot-4 wing currently beginning his sophomore season at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Fla., has been recruited to play for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles next year.
“He’s a very hard worker,” Gulf Coast Head Coach Jay Powell said. “We’ve been really fortunate. He did a great job at Bainbridge. When he came here, he matured and grew into a man. He’s grown and we’ve helped him get better.”
Baulkman graduated from Bainbrdige High School in 2011. During his time as a Bearcat, Baulkman was a two-time Region 1AAAA Player of the Year, named First Team All-State by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and Class AAAA Honorable Mention by the Georgia Sportswriter’s Association.
His senior year at Bainbridge, Baulkman averaged 20.8 points, 11 steals and 7.8 rebounds. He led the team to a 27-3 record and the Region 1AAAA Championship, and finished the season in the second round of the Georgia Class AAAA Tournament.
“He has the ability to score in a lot of different ways,” Southern Miss Head Coach Donnie Tyndal said. “He’s just a tough kid and he’ll bring a lot to the team.”
Bearcat Basketball Head Coach Rickey McCullough said he remembers Baulkman blowing up his junior and senior years.
“He’s just a guy who can really score the basketball,” McCullough said. “I’m always proud when my players can go better themselves as players and get an education. It’s a reward for me.”
