The Bainbridge eighth grade Bearcats and Lady Cats faced off against Thomas County Tuesday. The Bearcats came home with a 46-36 win while the Lady Cats fell to the Lady Jackets 45-27.
The Bearcats, now 1-1, were able to defend well and fight aggressively in their game against the Yellow Jackets.
“The boys played much better defense in the second half,” Bearcats coach Heith Maxwell said. “We were in better condition than our opponents and it made a difference in the fourth quarter.”
The Bearcats were led in scoring by David Smart, who netted 11 points. Dameon pierce followed with 10 points and Markel Broadnax was behind him with seven.
The Lady Cats suffered a disappointing loss to Thomas County. However, head coach Dorothy Pierce said she was impressed with the hustle her players showed.
“We must work to eliminate turnovers and continue to work on conditioning and learning the fundamentals of basketball,” Pierce said about her team, now 0-2. “I feel that once we improve these areas, we will then be in a position to play sound, fundamental and competitive basketball.”
Kiarra King racked up 11 points for the Lady Cats. Tyra Smart and Cheteria Jones were behind her, both with eight points.
