The eighth grade Bearcats and Lady Cats both opened their season Monday night against Pelham Middle School. The Bearcats fell 43-37 to the Hornets and the Lady Cats lost 46-23. Both are 0-1 for the season.
The Lady Cats fought hard but weren’t able to get the job done.
“I was impressed with the effort my team exhibited,” said Lady Cats coach Dorothy Pierce. “We must continue to execute plays, work hard on fundamental basketball and more intense conditioning.”
Kiarra King led the team with eight points, followed by Jasmine Rainey with six points and Brittany Green with three.
Bearcats coach Heith Maxwell pushed his team Monday night and said the Hornets were a tough opponent.
“They will probably be the best team we play all season,” Maxwell said. “We played physical and fast play, but came up a little short.”
Being the team’s first game, Maxwell said it was difficult to play such a good team on the road.
Kendall Lodman sank 11 points, followed by Dameon Pierce shooting nine points and David Smart shooting six.
Despite the loss, Maxwell said he is confident in his team.
“We will continue to get better,” he said.
