Dougherty County school board seeks to extend Mosely’s contract

The Dougherty County Board of Education voted Monday night to ask the State Board of Education to waive a rule that would have required interim superintendent Dr. David C. “Butch” Mosely to step down from the post on Sept. 30.
In addition to his work in Dougherty County, Mosely is also a three-term member of the Decatur County Board of Commissioners.
A recent change in state law prohibits any Department of Education employee from making a full-time salary while drawing retirement from the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia. Mosely draws a superintendent’s retirement of $155,000 annually and has a contract, which expires in January 2014, with Dougherty County worth $175,000 annually.
The Dougherty County school board wants to extend Mosely’s contract through June 2014. However, unless the waiver is granted, Mosely would be forced to suspend his retirement pay while working in Dougherty County.
