Local law enforcement officials had quite the banner week

Cleaning off my desk on a beautiful Friday afternoon, the last day of November.
• Kudos to Bainbridge Public Safety and the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office for the excellent work this week in keeping our community safe and getting “bad guys” off the street. Thursday morning, BPS officers arrested five people on federal charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Those arrested Thursday are part of an ongoing investigation the goes back several years. And If I were a betting man, I would bet more arrests are forthcoming. Then on Thursday night, the sheriff’s office made an arrest in the armed robbery of Bishop’s Travel Center on U.S. Highway 27 South. Although only one of the two robbers has been apprehended, it is only a matter of time before the second man is caught. Thank you, officers, for a job well done.
• There will be, or should be, a great college football game this afternoon. Alabama and Georgia will play this afternoon in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome for the Southeastern Conference championship, and, more importantly, the chance to play Notre Dame for the national championship. For anyone who knows me, it will come as no surprise that I hope Alabama will have — by virtue of winning the game — the opportunity to win its third national championship in the last four years. I have some very good friends who are diehard Bulldog fans and Justin Schuver, the managing editor of this newspaper, is a Notre Dame graduate and superfan. I love them all, but I hope they are all disappointed. But, should I be the disappointed one, I hope the Bulldogs bring back the crystal trophy from Miami in January.
• Although the 2013 River Town Days festival is six months away, I wanted to share some exciting news. The Friday night entertainment on May 10 next year will be The Dirty Guv’nahs, a great band from Knoxville, Tenn. Now, you are probably asking yourself, “Who the heck are they?’ Although the name of the band might not be familiar to you, if you are a fan of the television shows Criminal Minds or Nashville, chances are you have heard their music. Their original music has been featured on these shows as well as ESPN’s coverage of high school football. I am very excited that these guys will perform here because I believe they are on the verge of “hitting it big.” Check them out, I think you’ll like them, too.
• I saw a posting on Facebook recently that said, “No matter how big and bad you are, when a 2-year-old hands you a toy phone, you answer it.” Yep, it made me smile, too.
