McCarter named area DOT engineer

Georgia Department of Transportation District Engineer Joe Sheffield recently announced the appointment of William McCarter to the position of Area Engineer, serving Decatur, Grady, Miller and Seminole counties.

McCarter will be responsible for overseeing the construction and maintenance of all state routes in Decatur, Grady, Miller and Seminole counties, for the Tifton District.

“William is a definite asset for the Georgia Department of Transportation,” Sheffield said. “His experience will assist him in serving the cities, counties and communities he oversees in southwest Georgia. Do not hesitate to contact him if you need assistance.”

McCarter began his career with the Georgia Department of Transportation in 1987 as a temporary maintenance worker for the area-wide asphalt crew in Thomaston, Ga., and became a permanent employee as a maintenance worker for the area-wide sign crew later that year.

McCarter began working in construction 1989 at the Columbus Area Office and was promoted to engineer technician. While in construction, he served as a construction inspector in 1997 and as a construction project manager in 1998. In 2002 he was promoted to the assistant area engineer for construction, for the Americus Area Office.

McCarter is married to Angela. They are the parents of Alison, Miranda, Caitlin, Andrea and Dylan.
