Former Bainbridge High School Lady Cats All-Region 1-AAAA and All-State forward Alexis Burke is having an excellent career with the University of Illinois Illini womens basketball team.

As a freshman last season, Burke was named to the all-tournament team at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Whahine Showdown after scoring 18 points against both Long Beach State and 14th-ranked North Carolina.

Illinois coach Jolette Law says Burke is one of the most consistent three-point shooters on the team.

“We saw glimpses of Alexis’s three-point shooting ability against North Carolina,” Law said. “If she can remain consistent and continue to stay healthy, she’ll definitely be able to help us.

“Redshirt sophomore Amber Moore is our best three-point shooter, but Alexis is not far behind.”

As a senior with coach Latreisha Moon’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats during the 2008-2009 season, Burke saw action at guard and forward.

Coming out of high school, Burke was ranked No. 12 nationally, No. 2 in the Southeast and No. 1 in Georgia by peachstatehoops.com.

As a junior at Bainbridge, she averaged 22.5 points and 12.3 rebounds a game while leading the Lady Cats to the Georgia Class AAAA Final Four.

Through Friday, Burke was averaging 3.5 points per game and 1.7 rebounds per game for Illinois (2-4). She is averaging 8.3 minutes a game, and is 9-of-18 from the field and 3-of-7 from the free-throw line.
