Several local events will mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks on the United States.
On Thursday, Sept. 8, Woodmen of the World will hold a 9/11 Memorial Service at 6 p.m. at the group’s lodge on S. West Street.
That Thursday will also be a special day of remembrance at Bainbridge High School. The BHS Air Force Junior ROTC program has been selling T-shirts honoring the victims of 9/11 and is asking all students, faculty and staff who bought a shirt to wear it on Sept 8.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, the anniversary of the attacks, Patriot Day will be observed nationally. On that day, the U.S. President directs that the American flag be flown at half-staff wherever it is displayed. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern time.
A ceremony honoring fallen local heroes will be held in Willis Park on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The ceremony will include speakers and patriotic music. Decatur County Sheriff Wiley Griffin will read a list of fallen heroes from the local community.
9/11 T-Shirts
The 9/11 t-shirts the BHS JROTC program is selling were produced by a professional design company, are dark blue and have a design incorporating the Pentagon, World Trade Center and the American stars and stripes. The text on the shirt includes the phrases “September 11, 2001 – Never Forget – Flight 93 / Pentagon / World Trade Center.”
The shirts cost $15 each, with $2 extra for XL and XXL. Add $2 extra for each X size from 3XL-6XL.
People interested in ordering a shirt can contact Senior Master Sgt. Frank Geslak at Bainbridge High School. You can call him at (229) 248-2230 and ask for the ROTC room or email him at fgeslak@dcboe.com
In addition to showing respect for the victims of the attacks, sales of the T-shirts benefit the ROTC program at Bainbridge High School. A portion of the proceeds is also donated to the American Red Cross.
