Coach April Powell’s Bainbridge High School junior varsity Bearcats softball team won a pair of home games this week.
On Tuesday, they defeated the Cairo High School junior varsity Syrupmaids, 10-2, and on Thursday they defeated the Thomas County Central High School junior varsity Lady Yellow Jackets, 13-7.
They opened the scoring Tuesday against Cairo with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Summer Kirkland was hit by a pitch to open the inning, stole second and third and came in when third baseman Morgan Phillips grounded out from short to first.
The big blow in the inning was a two-run home run by pitcher Brooke Bates.
The Lady Cats pushed a run across in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 5-0. It was scored by second baseman Zakia Calloway, who reached on an error and came in on a fielder’s choice.
The Syrupmaids scored two in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Lady Cats came back with five in the fifth to put the game away.
Pitcher Brooke Bates got aboard on an error to start the fifth inning. She promptly stole second, moved over to third on a passed ball and came home when Shea Williams hit a double. Williams later came home with the second run of the inning on a passed ball.
Megan Vaughn wrapped up the scoring with a three-run home run. Brittany Moore, who singled, and Summer Kirkland, who was hit by a pitch, were aboard when she connected.
The big scoring inning for the Lady Cats, in their Thursday victory over the junior varsity Lady Yellow Jackets, was the third when they rallied for eight runs.
Key blows in the inning were two-run singles by Jordan Graham and Brooke Bates, and a two-run triple by Shea Williams.
