Services for Gwendolyn Holmes, 63, were held Aug. 13, 2011, at Bethel M.B. Church in Colquitt, with the Rev. Johnny Smith Sr. and the Rev. Bunivesta Holmes officiating.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Colquitt with friends of the family acting as pallbearers.

Gwendolyn was born Nov. 24, 1948, in Seminole County, Ga., the daughter of Calvin Holmes Jr. and Nora Holmes. She grew up in Colquitt and attended Bethel High School. After graduation she moved to Ohio, where she worked at General Motors for three years. She left Ohio and moved to Newark, N.J., and worked for the Red Devil Company for several years. She was also affiliated with New Jersey Public School Services.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father and a brother, Calvin Holmes III.

Survivors include her son Demetrius Holmes; six sisters, Gloria Holmes of Newark, N.J., Carolyn Rushin and Phyllis Sheffield, both of Lithonia, Ga., and Mildred Toliver, Alice Wolfe and Gracie Hamilton, all of Colquitt; three brothers, Robert Holmes and Albert Holmes, both of Colquitt, and the Rev. Bunivesta Holmes; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Guyton Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
