Funeral services for Jean Evelyn Hinson Spear, 66, of Quincy, Fla., were held Saturday, June 25, at Mount Hosea M.B. Church in Quincy with the Revs. Eddie York and Henry Flowers III officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery with Scotty Callaway, Carlton Flowers, James Dantley III and Phillip Hinson Sr. acting as pallbearers.
Mrs. Spear was born Oct. 7, 1944, in Bainbridge and died June 20, 2011, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Tallahassee. She graduated from Attapulgus Mount Moriah High School as valedictorian of her class in 1962. She attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and graduated with a bachelor’s in nursing. Her career spanned from teaching in Gadsden Technical Institute to being a psychiatric nurse at Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, from where she retired in 1993.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Ree Harris Hinson.
Survivors include two sons, Theophillus Rodney Smith of South Portland, Maine, and Roderick O’Brian Smith Sr. of Montgomery, Ala.; her father, Deacon Wash Hinson Sr., of Bainbridge; two brothers, Wash Hinson Jr., of Quincy and James Hinson of Midway; four sisters, Annie H. Flowers, of Cairo, Minnie H. Callaway of Bainbridge, Bettie H. Flowers of Quincy and Carolyn H. Marshall, Quincy; three grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Bruton Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
