Bearcats track team eighth in state

Coach Larry Cosby’s Region 1AAAA and defending State Class AAAA champion Bainbridge High School Bearcats track team finished eighth in a strong 58-team field at the State Class AAAA Meet Thursday through Saturday in Jefferson.

The Bearcats, who scored 21 meet points, were led by Delonte Martistee, who was crowned a state champion in the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, two and a half inches.

Others winning state medals for their performances included Jamar Venisee-Cosby with a sixth-place high jump of 6 feet, two inches; Rohan Gaines with an eighth-place long jump of 21 feet, 10 inches and Octavious Scott, with a seventh-place 300-meter hurdles time of 41.27 seconds.

Also winning state medals were Steven Crowell with a sixth-place shot put heave of 50 feet, 3 inches and Dewayne Gurley with a seventh-place discus throw of 152 feet, 6 inches.

Clark Central of Athens, Ga., won the AAAA team title with 36 points, while Thomas County Central of Region 1-AAAA finished eleventh with 15 points.
