BHS hoops teams honored Monday

The Bainbridge High School varsity boys and girls basketball teams were honored for their outstanding 2010 -2011 seasons at Monday night’s annual basketball awards banquet at the school cafeteria.

Coach Rickey McCullough’s Bearcats posted a 27-3 record, were Region 1AAAA champions and advanced to the second round of the State Class AAAA Tournament.

Coach Latreisha Moon’s Lady Cats went 21-7, won the Region 1AAAA South Sub-Region championship, finished second in Region 1AAAA and earned a berth in the first round of the State Class AAAA Tournament.

Bearcats forward Devon Baulkman, the Region 1AAAA player of the year for a second consecutive year, won three awards at the banquet.

Baulkman and fellow seniors Shawn Samuels, Rohan Gaines and Rodney Glenn received special recognition for being part of teams that posted an 81-12 record and were a part of two Final Four appearances and three Region 1AAAA championships during the past three years.

Coach McCullough was selected Region 1AAAA boys coach of the year for a third consecutive year.

Baulkman received awards for leading the team in scoring, rebounding and steals. He averaged 20.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 11 steals a game.

Baulkman was a first team selection on The Atlanta Journal Constitution Class AAAA All-State team and an honorable mention selection on the Georgia Sports Writer’s Association Class AAAA All-State  team.

Ronald Crawford, a first team All-Region 1AAAA selection, was named most improved player on Monday night. Crawford was the Bearcats’ leading scorer from three point range, shooting 46 percent.

Gaines was honored for leading the team in assists with 48. Bearcats captains’ awards went to Shawn Samuels and Adam Taylor.

Girls’ awards

Leading Monday’s Lady Cats award winners were senior guard April Thomas and senior center Bria Harris, who each received three honors.

They were honored for being first-team All-Region 1AAAA selections.

Thomas, a two time All-State selection and team captain, earned honorable mention recognition on both The Atlanta Constitution’s and Georgia Sportswriter’s Association Class AAAA All-State teams. She also won the scoring award for averaging a team high 19.9 points a game, the three point award, for hitting 64 percent from beyond the arc and the assist award for averaging a team-high 11 assists per game.

Thomas also won two most valuable player awards and a three point shooting award while participating in two senior All-Star games in Albany.

Harris won the Bearcat Award for her four years of dedicated play, the rebounding award for averaging a team high 11 a game and a captain’s award.
