[singlepic id=351 w=85 h=120 float=left]Several Bainbridge High School alumni have been participating as musicians and athletes at college football bowl games in recent weeks.

Ray Dominguez, a senior offensive lineman for the Arkansas Razorbacks, will be a leading starter for his team as they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, La., on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Three BHS alumni were suited up for the University of Georgia Bulldogs on Friday, Dec. 31: senior linebacker Darryl Gamble, junior defensive back Nick Williams and freshman backup center Ben Reynolds. The Bulldogs opposed the Central Florida Golden Knights in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., on Friday.

Future bright for former BHS teammates

Gamble graduated from UGA in December with a degree in housing. He now looks to re-unite with Dominguez, his former BHS classmate and teammate, as they workout in preparation for the 2011 NFL draft. In addition to being football standouts, Gamble and Dominguez also played together on BHS’ basketball team their senior year.

“I’m very excited,” Gamble said at a December news conference in Athens, Ga.

“That was one of the main things about coming to college and wanting to come to Georgia—just to come and get my degree first of all and then perform on the field. It’s all been falling pretty good for me.”

For Dominguez, playing in the Sugar Bowl—one of the major Bowl Conference Series match-ups—is especially nice because the Louisiana Superdome is climate-controlled. For the past two years, Dominguez’ Razorbacks have played outdoors in cold weather, at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis and the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas.

Dominguez is a three-year starter for the Razorbacks, including all 12 regular season games in 2010. He was part of an offensive line that paved the way for the first year in which Arkansas had both a 3,000-yard passer and a 1,000-yard rusher.

Dominguez and his teammates arrived in New Orleans on Dec. 28 and was to take part in several team dinners, along with numerous media events and practices, as the Sugar Bowl approaches on Jan. 4.

Bearcats at the New Orleans Bowl

[singlepic id=352 w=105 h=156 float=left]Four BHS alumni were representing Alabama’s Troy University at the R + L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 18, as the Trojans defeated Ohio University Bobcats 48-21.

The four members of Troy’s Sound of the South marching band who are from Bainbridge are Kylie McGlincy, Megan Ford, Will Parker and Sean Miller.

The Sound of the South performed three selections from its regular season halftime show in front of a large crowd at the Louisiana Superdome.

McGlincy said she and her bandmates had almost two full days of free time, which they used to go sight-seeing in the historic city of New Orleans. The Sound of the South also performed at a Troy pep rally, a special send-off of the Trojans’ players to the Superdome and were also invited to play the National Anthem for a 5K race benefiting the policemen of New Orleans, she said.
