Former Climax councilman Wells dies

Former Climax City Councilman and World War II Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient Clifford E. Wells died on Thursday at his Climax residence.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Climax United Methodist Church with the Revs. Wayne McDonald and Doug Halstead officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ivey Funeral Home.

Mr. Wells, who was 90, was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Climax and was the son of John Henry Wells and Ida Dixon Wells. He is a 1936 graduate of Climax High School and a 1940 graduate of Georgia Southern University with a bachelor of science degree in history.

He was the first president of Climax Community Club, a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office for 38 years and a member of the Climax United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4904,  American Legion Post 62 and the Cedar Grove Cemetery Committee.

He taught history at West Bainbridge High School and coached the football and boys basketball teams.

He later taught history at Climax High School and coached the girls basketball team.
