Coach Pilcher sees good things in victory

Bainbridge High School Head Football Coach Ed Pilcher saw some good things in all facets of the game during his teams 35-15 Friday night victory over Albany’s Westover High School Patriots at Centennial Field.

Prior to the season, Coach Pilcher said he would have running backs by committee and several backs have shared the ball thus far.

“I thought junior Aaron Hall did a good job running the football,” Pilcher said. “He is small, but he is tough and has decent quickness.”

Sophomores B.J. Cheatem, Damian Bouie, Michael Stubbs and Terry Lewis also ran hard, Pilcher said.

On the injury front, senior defensive end Dewayne Gurley suffered a hand injury against Westover, and several other players suffered various injuries.

Coach Pilcher said he thought freshman kicker Daniel Provence, who began filling in for injured senior kicker Keenan Adams, did a good job converting his extra points.

“Daniel missed a couple of field goals, but I think he was trying to kick the ball too hard because of the distance,” Pilcher said. “If he just follows through as he does on his extra points, everything will be fine.”

Coach Pilcher said he also thought his defense and special teams did some good things Friday night.

Sophomore defensive back Cameron McDowell had a big 45-yard interception return for a touchdown and senior kickoff and punt returner Shawn Samuels returned the second half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.

The Bearcats, who are 2-1 on the season, will have an open date this week and return to action Friday, Sept. 24 when they host new region foe Northside-Warner Robins High School Eagles, the top-ranked team in AAAA and the runner-up in AAAAA last year. The matchup will be next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Field.

“We will practice Monday through Thursday this week,” Coach Pilcher said. “We will give the team off Friday, when our coaches go out to scout our future opponents.”
