Lady Cats open season with big victory

Coach Eugene Singletary’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats softball team opened their season Tuesday with an 18-8 victory over the Brooks County High School Lady Trojans in Quitman.
They returned to action Friday against the Early County High School Lady Bobcats in Blakely. BHS’ JV softball team also played in Blakely Friday.
The varsity and junior varsity Lady Cats will host their home openers at their new on-campus field Monday against the Miller County High School Lady Pirates. The junior varsity game will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game will get underway at 6 p.m.
The Lady Cats took command of their Tuesday game with Brooks County early, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Winning pitcher Caitlin Cato drew a walk to lead off the BHS first. Left fielder Blair Morris was hit by a pitch, moving Cato up to second.
With one out, designated player Kristen Bennett got aboard on an error by the left fielder and Cato and Morris came around to score.
After third baseman Bria Harris drew a base on balls, right fielder Diamond Bouie singled in Bennett with the third run.
After shortstop Brianna Wade walked to load the bases, second baseman Avis Jackson lofted a sacrifice fly to center driving in Harris with the fourth run.
Catcher Courtney Cooper drove in Bouie and Wade with a two-out single and came around to score on a double by pitcher Cato.
They added seven more runs in the third inning. The big blow of the inning was a two-run double by first baseman Morgan Powell.
Powell also doubled in two runs and scored a run to highlight a three-run Lady Cats fourth inning rally.
Shortstop Wade walked and came around to score the Lady Cats’ final run in the fifth inning.
