Passing camp successful

Thursday’s rain did not deter coach Ed Pilcher’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats football team from having a good effort at their practice field passing camp.

“We got started a little late because of the rain, but when we did get going, I thought quarterbacks Steven Bench and Rohan Gaines threw the ball well,” the Bearcats head coach said.

Visiting schools attending the camp, which was held in shorts and T-shirts, were the Cairo High School Syrupmakers, the Abbeville High School Yellow Jackets and Eufaula High School Tigers from Alabama and the Leon High School Lions from Tallahassee, Fla.

“Steven Bench was trying to be a little precise with his throws early, but he threw better and better as the camp went along.” Pilcher said. “Rohan Gaines also had some good throws.”

“I thought our receivers did a better job catching the football than they did at our earlier passing camp in Cairo.”

Receivers catching the ball for the Bearcats Thursday were junior Rashad Kelley, seniors D.J. Stubbs and Kevin Coly and sophomore Cameron McDowell.

The Bearcats report to football camp today at the new Bainbridge High School gymnasium. Tomorrow, Sunday Aug. 1 is the first day they can officially don pads and work out in full gear.

They will have a scrimmage in full gear at 12:01 a.m. Sunday morning on their practice field adjacent to the gymnasium.

Camp will continue Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with three-a-day practice sessions planned each day.

Practice sessions are scheduled at 9 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
