Mike Wallace of the Georgia United Football Club and Cairo High School Syrupmakers head soccer coach Robert Peterson held a camp for Grace Christian Academy soccer players this week at the Bainbridge-Decatur County YMCA.
Wallace, who holds camps throughout the state, said that, while the camp’s emphasis was on the fundamentals of the game, campers also worked on approaching the ball and positioning their feet correctly when passing. They also did some running drills.
Peterson, a 2004 graduate of the University of Georgia, played on the 1997 and 1998 state championship soccer teams at Parkview High School, the 1999 Parkview semifinalists and the 2000 Parkview finalists.
He played soccer at Augusta College before transferring to Georgia.
He served as head boys soccer coach at Lithia Springs High School and assistant boys soccer coach at Clark Central High School in Athens before coming to Cairo.
Also taking part in the camp was Whitney Thomas, the all-time leading goal scorer in Bainbridge High School Lady Cats soccer history with 61 goals. She will be playing next season at Young Harris College in North Georgia.
Other basic fundamentals worked on in camp included kicking, passing and shooting.
