Funeral services for Pastor “Emeritus” Ruby Lee Smiley Smith were held Saturday, July 17, at Robert G. Mason Funeral Home in Washington, D.C., with Pastor Essie Rowe Cubit officiating.
Interment followed at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery with Michael Brandon, Benny Roy Edwards, Kenneth Edwards, Marcus Edwards, John Simpkins, Elgin Smiley II, Leroy Smiley II and Daryl Smith serving as active pallbearers.
Born Jan. 7, 1937, in Decatur County, Mrs. Smith died on July 12, 2010, in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Smith was educated in Bainbridge and graduated from high school in 1955. While in Bainbridge, she joined First Baptist Church and later, Union Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to Washington, D.C., in 1955, Mrs. Smith took business classes at Atlantic College and graduated in 1961. She worked for the U.S. Government Accountability Office for 11 years. Later in life, she was active in the leadership of two churches in the Washington, D.C., area, Mount Calvary Free Will Baptist Church and New Day Assembly of Christ Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Smith; her stepson, Michael Lee Smith; and three brothers, Reuben, Elgin and Leroy Jr.
Survivors include two sisters, Marion Smiley Edwards and Joyce Wilson, both of Bainbridge; her brother, William Moore of Philadelphia, Pa.; her adopted brother, Gregory Smily of Bainbridge; her foster son, James Alston; a god-daughter, Gwendolyn Collins; three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church families, loved ones and friends.
Robert G. Mason Funeral Home in Washington, D.C., was in charge of arrangements.
