Funeral services for Otis Smith, 85, of Bainbridge, will be held Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m. at First African Baptist Church with the Rev. John Thomas officiating.
Interment will follow in Jonas Lobe Cemetery with Jesse Thomas, Allen Gaines, Tony Gaines, Nicholas James, Percy James Jr. and Larry Gaines serving as active pallbearers.
Born Jan. 4, 1925, in Bainbridge, Mr. Smith died on July 17, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Smith fellowshipped at Mount Table Baptist Church in Bainbridge as a youth. He began his journey to Detroit, Mich., in his early 20s and returned to Bainbridge in 1951 to marry. He and his wife lived and worked in Michigan for a time before returning to Bainbridge in 1990. He worked 44 years with General Motors, in the foundry and later as a skilled tradesman and millwright. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union, the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. He was an active leader and assistant pastor at Bethel Church of the Apostolic Faith in Detroit, Mich., and Miracle Deliverance Church in Bainbridge.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Governor Smith and Lewis Smith; and his sisters, Ada Smith and Lottie Sanders.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Lula Gaines Smith of Bainbridge; his son, Philbert Smith of Estes Park, Colo.; four daughters, Una Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Audris Smith of Southfield, Mich., Sandra Smith and Selina Smith, both of Detroit, Mich.; three aunts, an uncle, two granddaughters and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
