Ben Daniels and Jason Smith of Leesburg pulled in 21.52 pounds of bass on Lake Seminole Saturday to win the $1,700 first prize in the third annual RSC Equipment Rentals Invitational Bass Tournament on Lake Seminole.
Stacy Harrell of Camilla and Daryl Cumbie of Climax took the $1,000 second prize with a five-fish limit weighing 19.10 pounds.
It was the second straight Leesburg team victory in a local bass tournament.
On May 30, the Leesburg father-and-son team of Robert and Rick Tindell won their second consecutive Bainbridge Bass Club Memorial Day Weekend Buddy Bass Tournament with a five-fish limit weighing 24.60 pounds. It was the club’s 39th annual tournament.
The RSC Invitational Tournament is held each year for the company’s customers and their partners. After weighing in their five-fish limit at the Earle May Boat Basin, the winners reported catching their fish in the Spring Creek area of the lake.
The winning team captured an additional $700 for also having the lunker of the tournament. It was caught by Daniels and it weighed 6.56 pounds. He reported catching the big prize just before 7 a.m. on a shad colored jig in the Spring Creek area of the lake.
The top local finishers were Cary Dollar and Jim Merritt of Bainbridge, who were third with 18.06 pounds. They took home a check for $800.
Dollar and Merritt reported catching their fish on trick worms after lunch, also in the Spring Creek area of the lake.
Tournament official Trey Rogers of RSC said the tournament was a success despite the severe heat on Saturday.
“We might try to have the tournament a little earlier next year when it is not so hot,” Rogers said.
“Even though it was hot Saturday, everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. There were a lot of five-fish limits and big fish caught. Most of the big catches were in the morning.”
