David Holt, a native of Attapulgus, is running for County Commission District 1 as a Democrat.

Holt will face off against incumbent Democrat Earl Perry in the July 20 primary election. With there being no Republican candidate, the race will be decided by the primary results.

An Attapulgus native, Holt said he is running for County Commission because he loves Decatur County, wants to serve his community and wants to do his part to contribute to the county’s needs.

Holt said he believes his business experience will help him if he is elected, particularly in the area of budgeting.

“We have to have a budget we can abide by,” Holt said. “I’ve experienced times in business when I’ve had to tighten my belt to make ends meet. I would look to cut out any wasteful spending.”

Holt’s main issue of concern is the condition of the county’s dirt roads. If elected, Holt said he would study why some roads are not maintained on a regular basis, in his view, and work to improve those that are in poor condition.

Holt said he would like to ensure the county’s new landfill off U.S. 27 South will be run efficiently, to preserve its useful lifespan for the county’s citizens.

Silver Lake Wildlife Management Area is a “beautiful property,” said Holt, who hopes county officials will maintain the site and preserve the natural environment for wildlife and for the enjoyment of citizens.

Lastly, Holt said he would like for County Commissioners to institute term limits for themselves.

Holt is the president of Architectural Hardware Products Inc., a company based in Tallahassee, Fla. The company supplied the doors and locks at the new Bainbridge High School and has also worked on projects at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and Florida State University.

He holds a degree in construction management in Southern Polytechnic State University of Marietta, Ga. His wife, Belinda, is a paraprofessional at John Johnson Elementary School. They attend First United Methodist Church.
