Lower temperatures nice this time of year

Published 2:40 pm Tuesday, June 8, 2010

We got into the month of June and summer will surely let us know that it has arrived in 2010.

Through the first of June, and I mean the night of June 1, 2010, the days were warm, though not really hot, and the nights were not cold, but they were cool compared to some years at this time.

There were a few days that we had the windows up in the house from before daylight to mid morning and it was comfortable. A couple of mornings it was more than comfortable with the shower activity and the moisture in the air. We will probably be wishing for a few more mornings like that in August.

I am not complaining at all.

I have enjoyed the month of May with its lower-than-average temperatures and seeing June start out that way was mighty pleasing.

I know it won’t last very long this month and may be over by the time you are reading this, but it has been good so far.

The rain showers that keep visiting our area has to have something to do with this staying cool, and will most probably leave when we need it to stay wet. Who knows? It may be fall in another three or four months and we won’t have as much heat then as we can stand, like July.

The more desirable temperatures have a few more folks visiting the lake than we normally have and we may have more folks going on down for a while this summer because they won’t be going to the Gulf due to the oil spill that has kept on spilling.

Folks were going down to Panama City fishing before the government stops all fishing for your safety. I don’t suppose that the government can keep you from going to the beach as long as you don’t go into the oily water. Most folks I see are just sitting or lying on a towel on the sand instead of going into the water anyway. Those Jaws movies that came out many years ago seem to still be working and keeping swimmers out of the surf.

If you want to get wet or just get a line wet, Lake Seminole will be able to fill your needs.

The fish will taste a little different than what you get on the coast, but you can still fry them and fill that craving for grease in your stomach. You can also bake or broil the fish for a healthier diet, though I must admit for baking or broiling some of the saltwater fish do taste better than some of our freshwater species, but fried is just about a tie. But we aren’t looking for a tie. A nice dress shirt would do a good job of keeping the sun from burning you, but a tie doesn’t do any good.

Last week, there were only three gates up at the dam. Two weeks prior to that there were seven gates up, and two weeks prior to that all the gates were up except for two, the ones on each end. The lake is in good shape and the river below the dam is also in good shape and getting to the point where fishing and catching is excellent. I went as far down as Wewa last week and everyone was talking about the numbers of fish that were being caught. That was the case both up and down the river.

I have a friend, Mark Shuler, in Blountstown.  I saw him twice last Tuesday. He had his boat behind his truck both times. He is a right good fisherman, but was off in Savannah working when the fish started to really bite. He came on home and participated. He likes to fish in the sho nuf swamp woods.

Last trip with his brother, the brother got bitten by a moccasin. Don’t worry about stuff like that. Mark got him to the hospital in just over 10 minutes. He might not have been so fast if he had realized that the boy had stepped on and broken several of his poles getting away from the snake. Last time I checked the fellow was doing mighty fine, but the snake hadn’t faired as well as he could have.

Flies have been out and things are looking good on the fishing front. Poles with live bait or an ultra light with beetle spins will put you in a fish cleaning mood right fast now. If you don’t want to catch many, don’t go. And this stuff may be habit forming.Lower temperatures nice this time of year
