Track teams honored for great seasons

Bainbridge High School’s boys and girls’ track teams, both coming off very strong seasons, were honored Wednesday night at the annual Bainbridge High School track banquet at the Jones-Wheat Elementary School cafeteria.

Trophies for the region and state champion boys’ team were presented by Head Coach Larry Cosby and Coach Larry Clark, who built the strong BHS track program and has been a part of it for 33 years.

The top distance runner award went to Joseph Ausgood, who finished first in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.01 and third in the 400-meter run in a time of 50.44 at the Region 1AAAA Meet in Albany.

At the State Class AAAA Meet in Jefferson, Ga., Ausgood was fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:57.27.

The Bearcats top sprinter award went to Denzel Reynolds who was on the first place Region 1AAAA 4-by-100-meter relay team with Brandon Handsford, Thomas Smiley, and Denzel Reynolds. Their winning time was 41.33.

Reynolds was also Region 1AAAA champion in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.64, and the 200-meter run in a time of 21.95.

At the State Class AAAA Meet in Jefferson, the 4-by-100-meter relay team of Shawn Samuels, Brandon Handsford, Thomas Smiley and Reynolds finished in a time of 41.31 which was the best in the state in all classifications.

The Bearcats top field events performer award went to Delonte Martistee. who was Region 1AAAA champion in the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 5 inches and the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches.

At the State Class AAAA Meet, Martistee was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 1 inch.

The high-point award winner was Denzel Gamble who won the Region 1AAAA 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.83 and was on the Region 1AAAA champion 4-by-100-meter relay team with Brandon Handsford, Thomas Smiley and Denzel Reynolds.

Gamble was second in the Region 1AAAA Meet in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 8 inches. At the State Class AAAA Meet, Gamble was second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.41 and the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, 4.5 inches.

Steve Crowell won the most improved performer award and the academic award for having the highest grade point average on the team. He won the Region 1AAAA championship in the shot put with a heave of 51 feet, 8 inches and was fourth in the state with a heave of 52 feet.

Coaches Awards for team leadership and discipline went to Octavious Scott and Dewayne Gurley.

Scott was Region 1AAAA champion in the 3300-meter hurdles in a time of 39.65 and a member of the Region 1AAAA champion 4-by-400-meter relay team with Harold Martin, Thomas Smiley and Joseph Ausgood. Their winning time was 3:22.41.

Gurley was second at the Region 1AAAA Meet in the discus with a throw of 162 feet, 7 inches.

Awards for the girls’ team, who were region champions and finished a strong seventh in a 48-team field at the State Class AAAA Meet, were presented by Coach Tandria Phillips, began with most valuable performer Nancy Session, rookie of the year Asia Beard and most improved performer Khadeeijah Cooper.

Session, who also played for the Lady Cats basketball team, was the 2009-2010 Bainbridge High School female senior athlete of the year. She was Region 1AAAA champion in the 400-meter run in a time of 56.60 and the 200-meter run in a time of 24.93. She also finished second in the state in the 400-meter run with her career best time of 55.59.

Session was also on the Lady Cats Region 1AAAA champion 4-by-400 meter relay team with Khadeeijah Cooper, Diamond Bouie and Jerisha Sutton that finished in a time of 4:07.96.

Beard, who is a freshman, won the Region 1AAAA championship in the100-meter dash in a time of 12.56 and was on the second place 4-by-400-meter relay team with Alexandria James, Ashley Mango and Shaniqua Daniels. Their time was 4:12.56.

In addition to being on the Region 1AAAA champion 4-by-400-meter relay team, most improved performer Cooper, who also won the academic award for having the highest grade point average on the team, was second in Region 1AAAA in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.39 and the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.56.

Winning Coaches Awards for team leadership and discipline were Alexandria James and Shaniqua Daniels. They were on the 4-by-400-meter relay team with Asia Beard and Ashley Mango that finished second in Region 1AAAA in a time of 4:12.56.
